Product Description
On November 21, 1981, at Istrana Air Base in northern Italy, one of the most remarkable speed duels in motorsport and aviation history unfolded. Legendary Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve lined up his 600-horsepower, turbocharged Ferrari 126CK Formula One car against an Italian Air Force F-104S Starfighter-a supersonic interceptor jet of the 51st Stormo-on a 1,000-meter runway.
Exploding off the line, Villeneuve took full advantage of the Ferrari's lightweight chassis and instantaneous launch. He edged out the supersonic jet by fractions of a second, crossing the finish line before the Starfighter's J79 turbojet could reach full thrust.
To commemorate this historic showdown and honor Villeneuve, the Italian Air Force presented a retired F-104 Starfighter to Ferrari in 1989.
Repainted in iconic Rosso Corsa with the Cavallino Rampante emblem, the retired F-104G was designated side code 4-27-a tribute combining the Italian Air Force's 4th Wing (4° Stormo) with Villeneuve's famous racing number 27.
Today, this one-of-a-kind aircraft stands on display at Ferrari's Fiorano test track-a striking monument to the enduring bond between Italian motorsport and fighter aviation.
